But it was nearly impossible, because on that light wind was the smell of the flowers that grew along the waterbank-the sweet desert roses. ![]() So, if you don’t want to be spoiled, stop now!Ī soft breeze swept up from the lake, carrying the night smells to Teman, and he closed his eyes, trying not to think about it. ![]() If you haven’t read Choices, I’ll warn you there’s a bit of spoiling ahead. (I just re-read it to find the spot and paste it in here and, yeah, ended up bawling. In fact, it hit me so hard, I had to struggle for a moment because the emotion in this scene and the one preceding it are quite difficult. I came to me, clearly, the scene leading up to this, the setting, the emotions, everything. I’d been working through bits of the book in my head and when I heard it, bam, it hit. I’d been driving along, minding my own business, listening to my entire music library (a not-insubstantial list, in fact) and this song came up. Much of my writing comes out of an emotion I feel when I hear a song. Desert Rose from Sting is one of those that inspired an important scene from the Choices. And thanks to the internet, it's easier than ever to find stories that mirror our own experiences. In fact, a 2020 survey of 10,000 adults found that 61% felt lonely. ![]() If a book's summary doesn't give much away about its contents, looking up reviews online can be helpful.Įveryone feels lonely at some point in their lives-it's only natural. Audiobooks are another great option for feeling less physically alone. This could be a story that makes you laugh or feel seen, a book filled with imagery or frameworks to build upon, or one that offers kind words and affirmations. When seeking out a book on loneliness, it's important to look for something that will provide comfort.Ĭomfort is subjective, so ask yourself what makes you feel most supported and seek that out in a book. Renowned author Ernest Hemingway once said, "There is no friend as loyal as a book." And in times of loneliness, a book that helps make sense of those feelings can be a life-changing companion. Saunders has taught these personal favourites for many years, and is superbly adept at guiding us through them, alerting us to their flows and eddies, particularly through skilful questioning. There are three stories by Chekhov, two by Tolstoy and one each by Turgenev and Gogol. His analyses are based on deep experience and an extreme level of attentiveness. ![]() Saunders looks at seven short stories he has often taught and knows extremely well (and boy, does he really know them). It is essentially a series of reflections based on the classes he has run for 20 years at Syracuse University on the Russian short story in translation, and they are unmissable. ![]() This book shows he is also plainly an outstanding teacher. George Saunders is already an acclaimed short story writer, and his only novel Lincoln in the Bardo won the 2017 Booker Prize.
